If you have ever watched a $160,000 truck get reduced to a 5-mph lawn ornament on the shoulder of an interstate because a DEF quality sensor got confused, yesterday’s news matters to you. On July 27, Volvo and Mack announced DEF inducement software updates that end the 5-mph final derate on their engines — the last of the major truck makers to join a rollout that now covers Cummins, Paccar, Detroit, Volvo, and Mack power. Under the new software, a DEF fault takes you to 25 mph instead of 5, and only after roughly 160 hours of engine operation instead of as little as four. That is the difference between limping to the next exit and finishing the delivery, getting home, and fixing the truck on your schedule.
Here is the part most coverage is missing: the update is not automatic for most of the trucks small carriers actually run. The OEMs are pushing it to new and recent model years first, and older trucks — the 2015s and 2018s that make up most one-to-ten-truck fleets — have to come to a dealer, some not until 2027. Which means there is a specific phone call to make this week, and a specific way to run your operation while the old software is still in your ECM. Let’s do both.

What Actually Changed — and Why
Since 2010-era emissions rules, every diesel truck with an SCR system has carried inducement software: detect a DEF problem — empty tank, bad fluid quality, a failed sensor — and the engine progressively punishes the operator until the truck is crawling at 5 mph. The logic was to make ignoring emissions impossible. The practice was that a $40 NOx sensor failure could strand a load of produce four hours from delivery, force a tow, and cost a small carrier more in one afternoon than the sensor cost in a year. EPA guidance issued in August 2025 rewrote the parameters, and the engine makers have spent 2026 pushing new software to match: final inducement speed raised from 5 mph to 25 mph, and the countdown to that final speed stretched from as little as 4 hours to roughly 160 engine hours — on Detroit power, 8,400 miles or 160 hours — enough to finish the week, not just the off-ramp. Low-DEF-tank behavior generally keeps its old parameters on some platforms, so running the tank dry is still the one mistake the new software may not forgive.
Washington is not done, either. On July 15 the EPA proposed a rule that would go further — revising heavy-duty engine regulations and addressing DEF-failure derates outright, with public hearings July 29 and 30 and comments open through August 29. More on what to do with that below.
The OEM-by-OEM Rollout: Find Your Truck on This List
Cummins moved first: more than 1.5 million medium- and heavy-duty engines are covered, reaching heavy-duty truck engines back to model year 2017, with extended time before initial derate events and the 25-mph final speed. Paccar covers Kenworth and Peterbilt trucks with MX-11 and MX-13 engines built after 2018 — factory-installed on trucks built after July 20, 2026, dealer-installed for everything already on the road. Detroit is updating roughly 330,000 in-service Freightliner and Western Star vehicles with DD15 (2021–2025) and DD13 (2022–2025) engines, a rollout running through the end of 2026 — and note, the Detroit update is a hard plug-in at a dealer, not an over-the-air push. Volvo and Mack, as of yesterday, ship new VNL, VNR, Pioneer, and Anthem models with the software already installed, push remote updates to 2024-and-newer trucks by the end of this summer, and — this is the part that matters for used-truck buyers — extend coverage to post-2014 models by mid-2027 and post-2010 models by the end of 2027, through dealers.
Read that list against your own equipment column. A 2022 Cascadia with a DD15: covered, but you have to go get it. A 2019 Kenworth T680 with an MX-13: covered at the dealer. A 2016 Volvo VNL: covered — in about a year. The older and cheaper your iron, the longer you will be living with 5-mph software, and the more the discipline in the next section matters.
The Dealer Call to Make This Week
Do not wait for the OEM to find you. Dealers prioritize the customers who ask, and the smart play is to bundle the software flash with a PM service you were already going to buy so the truck loses zero extra days. Call your servicing dealer with the VIN in front of you and work through this, word for word if you like:
Write down the answers, put the date on the calendar, and do it for every truck in the fleet — eligibility differs by VIN, not by fleet. If you are shopping used iron right now, add one question to your pre-purchase checklist: has this truck had the inducement update, and if not, when is its build date eligible? Between two otherwise equal 2016 trucks, the one that is a year away from 25-mph software is carrying a real operational risk the seller is not pricing in — the same way we told you to price hidden costs in the leased-on versus own-authority break-even math: the number you ignore is the one that gets you.
The 160-Hour Window Is a Tool, Not a Vacation
Now the coaching. The new software changes what a DEF fault costs you; it does not change what it means. A NOx sensor code with 160 hours on the clock is not a suggestion to run three more weeks and hope — it is a countdown you now get to spend intelligently. The ILG standard: the day a DEF or SCR fault lands, you finish the load you are under, you book the diagnostic appointment before you book the next load, and you plan the repair inside the same week. A driver who runs a fault quietly for two weeks because the truck “feels fine” hands you a derate at the worst possible moment — 160 hours burns fast at 600 miles a day — and hands your customer a service failure you promised them would never happen. Put it in your driver policy in one sentence: DEF light on means dispatch is told the same day, no exceptions — the same day-one discipline we teach for planning the truck’s week, because a repair you can schedule is a cost and a repair that schedules you is a crisis.
And spend ten minutes preventing the fault in the first place, because the cheapest derate is the one that never triggers. Buy DEF from high-turnover pumps or sealed jugs — stale fluid and contamination are behind a huge share of quality codes. Keep the tank above a quarter and never run it dry, since low-tank inducements kept their old, harsher parameters on several platforms. And when a sensor does fail, fix the sensor — do not let anyone talk you into a delete kit, because the same EPA that relaxed derates is still writing six-figure tampering settlements, and the new 25-mph software removes the last good excuse anyone had for one.
EPA Wants to Go Further — and Your Comment Window Is Open
The software rollout implements last August’s guidance, but the July 15 proposed rule would write the fix into regulation itself — revising SCR requirements, adjusting useful-life and warranty provisions, and addressing DEF-failure derates for trucks and for the farm and construction equipment that shares the same chemistry. Public hearings run July 29 and 30 — this week — and written comments are open until August 29. Small carriers almost never show up in these dockets, which is exactly why the comments that do arrive from one-to-ten-truck fleets get read. You do not need a lawyer: two paragraphs, in your own words, describing what a 5-mph derate has actually cost your operation — the tow bill, the missed delivery, the customer you had to make whole — and your support for making the relief permanent. The SBA’s Office of Advocacy is collecting small-business input, and the notice has the docket details. Fifteen minutes of typing is cheap insurance on a rule that decides how your next truck behaves when a sensor dies. It is the same lesson as last week’s FMCSA paperwork rollbacks: deregulation is arriving in trucking, and the carriers who engage with it early are the ones it gets written for.
One caution while the transition runs: until your specific VIN has the new software, operate as if the old rules apply — because in your ECM, they do. The worst position this year is the carrier who read the headlines, assumed every truck now gets 160 hours, and finds out at a fuel island that his 2016 is still running four-hours-to-5-mph code.
Bottom Line
The 5-mph derate has been the single most disproportionate punishment in trucking — a sensor-sized problem with a tow-truck-sized bill — and as of yesterday every major engine maker has committed to killing it. But the relief arrives VIN by VIN, dealer visit by dealer visit, and the carriers who benefit first will be the ones who called, scheduled, and bundled the flash into a PM — not the ones who assumed. Make the dealer call this week, put the DEF-light rule in your driver policy tonight, and spend fifteen minutes telling EPA what 5 mph actually cost you. Your truck is going to break a sensor eventually. What happens in the next ten seconds after that code lands was just decided — make sure your trucks are on the right side of it.
